Born in a small coastal village near Calcutta in 203 AD, to a humble Brahmin
family, Babaji was named Nagaraj, meaning King of Serpents, a fitting name for
one destined to master the divine Kundalini energy. He was an unusually
spiritual child, showing a deep inclination towards meditation and yoga from a
tender age.
In his early teenage years, he was guided by a wandering Siddha, named
Agastyar, who recognized the potential in Nagaraj. The Siddha took him under
his wing and initiated him into the profound mysteries of Kriya Yoga, a
powerful practice designed to accelerate spiritual evolution.
For the next few years, Nagaraj was under the rigorous tutelage of Agastyar. He
practised Kriya Yoga intensely, immersing himself in severe austerities, often
forgetting to eat or sleep. His parents, concerned for his well-being, arranged
a marriage for him, hoping it would anchor him to a normal life. However,
Nagaraj's spiritual calling was unshakeable.
On his wedding day, it is said that Nagaraj ran away, leaving behind his
family, home, and his bride-to-be. He journeyed north, crossing the Gangetic
plains and the dense forests, until he reached the mighty Himalayas.
In the solitude of the snow-clad mountains, Nagaraj continued his rigorous
practices, his body enduring the extremes of weather, and his mind focused on
the singular goal of Self-realization. One day, while meditating in a cave, he
was visited by a radiant being who introduced himself as the Siddha
Bhogarnathar. Bhogarnathar, recognizing the spiritual maturity in Nagaraj,
bestowed upon him the final initiations into Kriya Yoga.
After years of intense sadhana, Nagaraj attained the state of Self-realization,
becoming the embodiment of the timeless spirit, an Avatar. At this point, he
took on the name Babaji, meaning revered father, as a sign of his spiritual
rebirth. It is said that Babaji attained physical immortality at this time, his
body transforming into a light-body, free from the constraints of ageing and
death.
Babaji retreated into the hidden valleys of the Himalayas, living a life of
seclusion. However, his influence was not confined to these remote regions.
Throughout history, he guided countless seekers, appearing to them in visions
or dreams, and sometimes even in physical form.
In the late 19th century, Babaji's story reached the world through Lahiri
Mahasaya, a disciple who was initiated by Babaji into Kriya Yoga. Lahiri
Mahasaya's student, Swami Yukteswar Giri, further spread Babaji's teachings,
and Yukteswar's disciple, Paramahansa Yogananda, introduced Kriya Yoga to the
West through his book "Autobiography of a Yogi", where he shared the
extraordinary tale of Maha Avatar Babaji.
According to Yogananda, Babaji's mission is the spiritual
upliftment of humanity through the dissemination of Kriya Yoga. Babaji is
believed to maintain a close connection with all those who sincerely seek his
guidance, appearing to them when their devotion and need are sincere.
The story of Maha Avatar Babaji is a captivating tale of timeless wisdom,
eternal youth, and divine love. Whether one accepts it as truth or legend, it
offers profound insights into the possibilities of human evolution and the
eternal nature of the spirit The story of Maha Avatar Babaji resonates beyond
the Himalayas, inspiring countless spiritual seekers worldwide. While his
physical appearances have been rare and witnessed by a select few, his
spiritual presence is felt by many.
In the early 20th century, a renowned Indian saint, Swami Satyananda, claimed
to have met Babaji in the Himalayas. During their encounter, Babaji instructed
Satyananda to construct an ashram in his name and spread the teachings of Kriya
Yoga. With Babaji's blessings, Satyananda established the Hariharananda
Gurukulam in Odisha, India, serving as a spiritual home for many seekers.
Babaji's teachings emphasize the realization of the Divine within oneself. He
encourages the practice of Kriya Yoga as a means to attain this realization.
Kriya Yoga is a scientific technique, involving breath control and meditation,
that accelerates spiritual growth by purifying the body and mind.
Many have reported miraculous experiences associated with Babaji. Stories
abound of his appearing in dreams or visions to guide or reassure individuals
in times of distress or spiritual quest. Some have even reported physical
manifestations, where Babaji appeared to them in person, only to disappear once
his message was delivered.
However, Babaji's primary influence has been through his spiritual teachings.
His message is simple yet profound: love God and serve humanity. Through the
practice of Kriya Yoga, he encourages individuals to experience their divine
nature and live in harmony with the world around them.
Even in the 21st century, Babaji's legacy continues to
inspire. Many spiritual organizations around the world, such as the
Self-Realization Fellowship founded by Paramahansa Yogananda, continue to
disseminate Babaji's teachings and the practice of Kriya Yoga. These
organizations serve as spiritual sanctuaries for millions of seekers, carrying
forward Babaji's mission of global spiritual upliftment.
