One such account involves Lahiri Mahasaya, a revered
spiritual master who played a significant role in popularizing Kriya Yoga. Born
in 1828 in the village of Ghurni, Lahiri Mahasaya was a regular man, working as
an accountant for the British Indian government. He was married and had
children, living a life that seemed ordinary by most standards.
One day in 1861, Lahiri Mahasaya was sent on work to
Ranikhet in the Himalayas. While walking on a narrow mountain path, he felt an
uncanny pull towards a cave. He followed this intuitive impulse and discovered
a yogi meditating inside.
This yogi was none other than Maha Avatar Babaji. Upon
seeing Lahiri Mahasaya, Babaji welcomed him warmly, like a long-lost friend. He
revealed that Lahiri Mahasaya was one of his chosen disciples in a past life
and had now come to relearn the ancient science of Kriya Yoga, which had been
lost to humanity over the centuries.
Lahiri Mahasaya spent several months in the cave with
Babaji, learning and mastering Kriya Yoga. After this period, Babaji instructed
him to return to his worldly life and teach Kriya Yoga, emphasizing that
spirituality was not to be renounced from society but to be practiced amidst
it.
Another account of Babaji’s life revolves around his meeting
with Swami Pranabananda, known as the "saint with two bodies." One
day, Pranabananda happened upon a young wandering ascetic who identified
himself as Babaji. He was taken aback by the young ascetic's resemblance to
Babaji, who was rumored to be centuries old. Overwhelmed by curiosity,
Pranabananda asked the ascetic if he was indeed Maha Avatar Babaji, to which
the young man smiled and replied, "Yes."
Pranabananda expressed his longing to see Babaji in his real
form, as an eternally youthful figure. Obliging, the ascetic transformed before
Pranabananda's eyes into the radiant being of Babaji, confirming his identity.
Overjoyed and awe-struck, Pranabananda sought Babaji's guidance, and Babaji
blessed him and vanished, leaving the saint in a state of profound bliss and
wonder.
Years later, Swami Yogananda, a direct disciple of Lahiri
Mahasaya, met Babaji through his own master, Sri Yukteswar. The account is
detailed in Yogananda's book, 'Autobiography of a Yogi,' where he describes his
mystical encounter with Babaji. During this meeting, Babaji acknowledged
Yogananda's mission to spread the teachings of Kriya Yoga in the West and
promised him divine assistance in his endeavors.
Babaji's life, though not documented in the conventional
sense, is rich with extraordinary narratives and life-changing encounters. His
mystic power, coupled with his eternal youth, has stirred the imaginations and
spiritual yearnings of countless seekers. Known to appear and disappear at
will, guiding and teaching his disciples across time, he is more than a person;
he is an eternal spiritual presence, a beacon of divine light, and an
embodiment of ageless wisdom.
Over centuries, Maha Avatar Babaji's life and teachings have
continued to guide humanity towards higher consciousness. His central teachings
revolve around the practice of Kriya Yoga, a meditation technique that he has
passed down through a lineage of spiritual masters, including Lahiri Mahasaya,
Sri Yukteswar, and Paramahansa Yogananda. This technique has been instrumental
in enabling countless individuals to embark on their spiritual journeys,
fostering self-realization and divine communion.
However, the mystery of Babaji extends far beyond his
teachings. The accounts of his manifestations and the miracles associated with
him have inspired awe and reverence. His transcendence of physical laws and
time, as well as his ability to maintain an eternally youthful form, portray
him not merely as a man, but as a divine being.
One such account narrates the miraculous appearance of an
ashram for Babaji's disciples. A disciple of Babaji, named Nagaraj, wished to
have a permanent place for the yogis who followed Babaji. Sensing Nagaraj's
noble intention, Babaji promised him that he would arrange for an ashram.
Within a few days, a wealthy merchant, who was unknown to the disciples, came
to them and donated a vast tract of land, saying he was instructed to do so in
his dreams. Today, the ashram stands as a testament to Babaji's divine powers
and continues to serve as a spiritual sanctuary for seekers.
In another instance, a group of skeptical journalists
attempted to expose Babaji as a fraud. They journeyed to the Himalayas,
intending to disprove the tales of the immortal yogi. To their astonishment,
Babaji appeared before them in a radiant, youthful form. He welcomed them
warmly and addressed each by their name, revealing intimate details about their
lives that he couldn't have possibly known. The encounter transformed the
journalists, who returned as changed individuals, their skepticism replaced
with awe and reverence.
While the stories of Babaji's miracles are numerous, the
essence of his teachings remains constant: spiritual evolution and
self-realization through the practice of Kriya Yoga. Despite his mystical
powers and divine manifestations, Babaji always redirects the focus towards the
ultimate goal of human life, which is to realize one's divine nature.
Babaji's life story is not one defined by dates or linear
events but by his enduring spiritual presence and impact. His teachings, passed
down through his disciples, continue to influence and guide millions of
spiritual seekers worldwide. His manifestations and miracles serve as reminders
of the divinity that exists within each one of us, waiting to be discovered.
Despite the veil of mystery surrounding his life, Maha Avatar Babaji's legacy is
a beacon of light, guiding humanity towards spiritual enlightenment and
self-realization.
